Attacking Structures

As detailed in the tactical theory Attacking Structures* guide, attacking structures are tactical structures formed by a team’s attacking shape*, off the ball movement* and on the ball movement*.

Appropriate attacking structures can be achieved by considering your use of forward movement partnerships*, as well as your team’s penetration score*, solidity score* and support score*.

Example attacking structures are provided in the Example Tactics article.

Forward Movement Partnerships

As detailed in the tactical theory Attacking Structures* guide, a forward movement partnership is a pairing of two players (the partners) who are assigned nearby playing positions* and make vertical movement such that their relative or combined vertical movement creates space*.

Forward movement partnerships can be implemented by assigning suitable tactical roles* to an attacking partner* and an ancillary partner* in each partnership.

Detailed for each of the main positional areas, where relevant, are:

  • General usage – the recommended types of (off the ball) forward movement partnership to use. On the flanks and in central attack these depend on your desired playing style.
  • Types of forward movement partnership – suggestions for implementing each type of forward movement partnership that is mentioned in the recommended use.

You may want to select more generalist player roles and duties at this stage and make adjustments later when considering responsibility distribution*, which is analysed in the Central Defence, Central Midfield, Flank and Central Attack Responsibilities guides. Such player roles and duties are shown below in bold italics.

Central Defence

Forward movement partnerships are not necessary in central defence.

Penetration Score

As explained in the tactical theory Attacking Structures* guide, a team’s penetration score can be used to assess whether the typical vertical movement of its players enables them to penetrate space* effectively.

Along with the solidity score and support score, the penetration score can be used to fine-tune your team’s formation and attacking structures.

Details of how to calculate your team’s penetration score and the recommended range of scores are provided below. Included in each part of the calculation are the relevant player roles and duties, if used with their default player instructions, as per the analysis in the Player Roles & Duties guides.

Recommended score:

  • 1.00 or higher.
  • For a high relative overall ability team (or in matches against low relative overall ability teams) – you may want to use attacking structures that give a moderate to high penetration score.
  • For a low relative overall ability team (or in matches against high relative overall ability teams) – you may want to use attacking structures that give a moderate to low penetration score.

Score interpretation:

  • Low <= 1.00
  • Moderate <= 1.10
  • High <= 1.20+

Calculation: the sum of your players’ contribution scores divided by 2.50.

The contribution scores are as follows:

  • … Deep Lying Forward (CF Attack),
  • Advanced Forward (CF Attack),
  • Target Man (CF Attack),

Solidity Score

As explained in the tactical theory Attacking Structures* guide, a team’s solidity score can be used to assess whether the typical vertical movement of its players enables them to retain solidity* effectively.

Along with the penetration score and support score, the solidity score can be used to fine-tune your team’s formation and attacking structures.

Details of how to calculate your team’s solidity score and the recommended range of scores are provided below. Included in each part of the calculation are the relevant player roles and duties, if used with their default player instructions, as per the analysis in the Player Roles & Duties guides.
