Choosing Roles & Duties

The second stage of creating your tactic is to choose player roles and duties that are appropriate for your chosen tactical style.

This involves choosing roles and duties that:

  • Generally suit your chosen playing style – suitable playing styles are provided for each role and duty below. However, you do not need all of your roles and duties to suit your playing style, as long as the majority do. Roles and duties that contrast your playing style can be useful for other reasons.
  • Implement your chosen system specialisation level, if any, as explained previously – the responsibility specialism levels for each role and duty are provided below. These will determine your system specialisation level. You only need to choose roles and duties with particular responsibility specialism levels to the extent that you want to implement a particular system specialisation level.

In addition to this, you should try to choose player roles and duties that achieve a good playing system balance. Advice on doing this is provided below.

UI:

  • Tactics > Overview tab
    • Formation graphic
      • Enables you to set player roles and duties, and pick the players to assign them to, using the two drop-downs on each playing position icon.
      • Select the top drop-down to set a player role (various names) and player duty (Defend, Support or Attack, or Stopper or Cover, which are variants of Defend in central defence) for the playing position.
      • Select the bottom drop-down to pick a player for the playing position, role and duty. The role ability star ratings give your assistant manager’s opinion of each player’s ability in the role and duty (a combination of his current ability and the suitability of his playing attributes for the role/duty).
  • Tactics > Player tab
    • Provides an alternative UI for setting player roles and duties.

Explanation of analysis:

  • Instructions – the tactical instructions given by the role/duty. Most of these instructions are the player instructions that are shown in the game (select the relevant playing position icon and click the Edit/Add button at the top-right of the screen) but for some roles/duties hidden instructions are given (these are written in terms of their related playing methods.
  • Natural playing styles – the playing styles that the role/duty is most suitable for based on its instructions (but not taking into account forward movement partnerships, which are detailed separately below).
  • Specific analysis – any more specific advice related to the player movement instructed by the role/duty and any additional tactical theory analysis specific to the role/duty.
  • Forward movement scores – the role/duty’s contribution scores for the team’s penetration score, solidity score and support score. Your team’s scores can be calculated by totalling the contribution scores of all of your chosen roles/duties. Sufficiently high team scores can improve playing system balance by helping your team to penetrate space, retain solidity and provide attacking support effectively.  Advised team scores are listed below.
    • Penetration score – at least 10.0
    • Solidity score – at least 16.0
    • Support score – at least 12.0
      • Support score if you are using direct plays – at least 11.0
      • Support score if you are using short plays – at least 13.0
  • Forward movement partnerships – useful forward movement partnerships that the role/duty can instruct a player to be part of if he is paired with an appropriate partner. Such partnerships can improve playing system balance by helping your team to create space effectively. This includes advice on which playing styles (or system fluidity level in some cases) each partnership is most useful for and how to pair each partner.
    • Attacking partner – the player who makes the most forward movement in the partnership.
    • Ancillary partner – the player who makes the least forward movement in the partnership.
    • Overloading partner – the player and his partner both make forward movement to a large extent.
    • Interchanging partner – the player alternates his forward movement with his partner.
  • Positional responsibilities – the positional responsibilities that the role/duty instructs a player to perform or contribute to, along with the relevant instructions given to the role/duty. Advice on how many performers and contributors are needed for each responsibility to achieve a good playing system balance is provided in the separate analysis per positional area below.
    • Performs – the player carries out the responsibility to a significant extent.
      • Performs atypically – the player performs the responsibility in an unusual way that may not be effective. You may therefore want to use an alternative role/duty for the responsibility.
      • Performs but vacates area – the player performs the responsibility but spends a significant amount of time outside the positional area. You may therefore want to use an alternative role/duty for the responsibility.
    • Contributes – the player carries out the responsibility to a small extent.
      • Contributes atypically – the player contributes to the responsibility in an unusual way that may not be effective.
      • Contributes but vacates area – the player contributes to the responsibility but spends a significant amount of time outside the positional area.
    • Responsibility specialism level – the extent to which the player carries out the responsibility. This is based on his instructions. For higher specialism levels, in some cases, advice is given on how to counterbalance the player with one or two other players who carry out an opposing responsibility.
    • Responsibility focus level – the extent to which the player’s duty corresponds with the responsibility. Attack duties give a player a mixture of higher and lower focus levels. Support duties give a player versatile focus levels (in most cases). A higher focus level means that the player carries out the responsibility in a more direct way. A lower focus level means that the player carries out the responsibility in a less direct way (and is therefore not necessarily a bad thing). A versatile focus level is a balance between the two and means that the player can carry out responsibilities in a more balanced way and can essentially alternate between a higher focus level and a lower focus level when required.
    • Direct instructions – the instructions given by the role/duty that are directly related to carrying out the responsibility.
    • Indirect instructions – other instructions given by the role/duty that may help with carrying out the responsibility.
    • Atypical instructions – instructions given by the role/duty that may hinder the carrying out of the responsibility.
    • System-specific instructions – instructions given by the role/duty that can help with carrying out the responsibility in particular cases but could otherwise hinder. Advice on how to use the role/duty in these cases is also provided.

Central Defence

Central defence roles and duties are analysed below. This includes all of the roles/duties that are available in the DC playing positions.

If you intend to use a WBL and WBR then it is advisable to use three DCs. Otherwise, two DCs is usually sufficient.

Assigning Responsibilities

Try to assign positional responsibilities in central defence by choosing roles and duties such that for:

  • Providing attacking cover – at least two players perform.
  • Providing defensive cover – at least one player performs.
  • Applying defensive pressure – at least one player performs.
  • Playing safe – at least one player performs.

However, if you are using a more fluid playing system (or possibly a mixture of a more fluid and more structured playing system) then you may want to use two Support duty players who contribute to a responsibility as an alternative to one player who performs it. In practice though, this is not relevant in central defence.

To find appropriate roles/duties for each of these positional responsibilities look for the responsibility under “positional responsibilities … in central defence” in the analysis of each role/duty.

Some roles/duties in other positional areas can be used to carry out central defence positional responsibilities if desired. Details are included in the analysis of the relevant roles/duties. For example, playing safe in central defence may be performed by a Half Back (DMC Defend).

Providing defensive cover is usually performed by one of the players who provides attacking cover to avoid problems with providing defensive cover in the defensive transition phase. However, it is possible to separate these responsibilities by using two players who perform providing attacking cover but not defensive cover, for example …

  • … 2 Stopper duty DCs, …

… And combining them with another player who performs providing defensive cover but not attacking cover, for example …

  • … Libero (DC Support).

… As long as both players have a higher or versatile focus for providing attacking cover and defensive cover (that is, Defend, Stopper, Cover or Support duties in most cases).

If you are using a formation with three centre back (DC) playing positions then it can be useful to assign the responsibilities of providing attacking cover, providing defensive cover and applying defensive pressure symmetrically to help to retain spatial compactness effectively. This is done by assigning each responsibility to either the central DC or to both the DCL and the DCR.

Central Midfield

Central midfield roles and duties are analysed below. This includes all of the roles/duties that are available in the DMC and MC playing positions.

Forward Movement Partnerships

When choosing roles and duties in central midfield it is advisable that you consider forward movement partnerships. In particular:

However, if you are using a more fluid playing system (or possibly a mixture of a more fluid and more structured playing system) then you may, alternatively, want to form a balanced interchanging partnership so that players can alternate their forward movement as appropriate.

To find appropriate roles/duties for each type of forward movement partnership look for the type of partnership under “forward movement partnerships … in central midfield” in the analysis of each role/duty.

Some roles/duties in other positional areas can be used to form forward movement partnerships in central midfield if desired. Details are included in the analysis of the relevant roles/duties.

Assigning Responsibilities

Try to assign positional responsibilities in central midfield by choosing roles and duties such that for:

  • Providing attacking cover – at least one player performs.
  • Providing defensive cover – at least one player performs.
  • Applying defensive pressure – at least one player performs.
  • Stretching play – at least one player performs.
  • Playing safe – at least one player performs.
  • Creating chances – at least one player performs.

If you are using a more fluid playing system (or possibly a mixture of a more fluid and more structured playing system) then you may want to use two Support duty players who contribute to a responsibility as an alternative to one player who performs it.

To find appropriate roles/duties for each of these positional responsibilities look for the responsibility under “positional responsibilities … in central midfield” in the analysis of each role/duty.

Some roles/duties in other positional areas can be used to carry out central midfield positional responsibilities if desired. Details are included in the analysis of the relevant roles/duties. For example, stretching play in central midfield may be performed by a Libero (DC Attack).

Providing defensive cover is usually performed by a player who also performs providing attacking cover to avoid problems with providing defensive cover in the defensive transition phase. However, it is possible to separate these responsibilities by using a player who performs providing attacking cover but not defensive cover, for example …

  • … Ball Winning Midfielder (DMC/MC Defend), …

… and combining him with another player who performs providing defensive cover but not attacking cover, for example …

  • … Defensive Midfielder (DMC Support) …
  • … Central Midfielder (MC Support) …

… As long as both players have a higher or versatile focus for providing attacking cover and defensive cover (that is, Defend or Support duties in most cases).

If you are using one or more wide and off-centre central midfielders then it can be useful to assign the responsibilities of providing attacking cover, providing defensive cover, applying defensive pressure and stretching play symmetrically to help to retain spatial compactness effectively. This is done by assigning each responsibility to either a central DMC or MC, or to a pair of wide and off-centre central midfielders on opposite sides. Wide and off-centre central midfielders include:

  • Your widest DMCs if using three DMCs.
  • Your widest MCs if using three MCs.
  • DMCs and MCs instructed to Stay Wider (for providing attacking cover and stretching play only).
  • WBL/WBRs and ML/MRs instructed to Sit Narrower (for providing attacking cover and stretching play only).

The Flanks

Flank roles and duties are analysed below. This includes all of the roles/duties that are available in the DL/DR, WBL/WBR, ML/MR and AML/AMR playing positions.

If you use a lone wide player on either flank (only one player on the flank) then it is advisable to give him a DL/DR or WBL/WBR playing position to make it easier to balance your tactic.

Forward Movement Partnerships

When choosing roles and duties on the flanks it is advisable that you consider forward movement partnerships. In particular:

  • It can be useful to form one or more overlapping partnerships (in particular, high risk, or possibly medium risk, overlapping partnerships) …
    • … If you are using attacking football – to help to create space in congested advanced areas.
    • … If you are using short plays – to help to create space when cycling possession.
  • It can be useful to form one or more direct partnerships (in particular, high risk or overloading direct partnerships) …
    • … If you are using defensive football – to help to penetrate space quickly from deeper areas.
    • … If you are using direct plays – to help to penetrate space directly.

However, if you are using a more fluid playing system (or possibly a mixture of a more fluid and more structured playing system) then you may, alternatively, want to form one or more balanced interchanging partnerships so that players can alternate their forward movement as appropriate.

To find appropriate roles/duties for each type of forward movement partnership look for the type of partnership under “forward movement partnerships … on the flank” in the analysis of each role/duty.

Some roles/duties in other positional areas can be used to form forward movement partnerships on the flanks if desired. Details are included under How to Form Partnerships on the Flanks Using Central Players below. This can be particularly useful if you use a lone wide player on a particular flank, as an appropriate partner from a central positional area can provide him with attacking support or attacking cover that he may otherwise lack.

How to Form Partnerships on the Flanks Using Central Players

Central roles/duties that can be used to form forward movement partnerships on a flank include:

  • Your closest DC to the flank, if you are using three DCs or a Half Back.
  • Your closest DMC to the flank, if you are using three DMCs.
  • Your closest MC to the flank, if you are using three MCs.
  • Your closest AMC to the flank, if you are using three AMCs.
  • An off-centre DMC or MC on the same side instructed to Stay Wider or move towards the flank, for example a Carrilero (MC Support) or Mezzala (MC Support/Attack) – a Carrilero is particularly effective at providing both attacking support and attacking cover on the flank.

The types of forward movement partnership that such roles/duties can form on a flank can be worked out from their tactical instructions, as follows:

  • If instructed to Hold Position – the player can act as an ancillary partner in a low or medium risk partnership (a direct partnership if the attacking partner is in a level or more advanced playing position, or an overlapping partnership if he is in a deeper playing position).
  • If instructed to Get Further Forward – the player can act as an attacking partner in a high or medium risk partnership (a direct partnership if the ancillary partner is in a level or deeper playing position, or an overlapping partnership if he is in a more advanced playing position) or he can act as an overloading partner in an overloading direct partnership.
  • Otherwise – the player can act as an ancillary partner in a high risk partnership (a direct partnership if the attacking partner is in a level or more advanced playing position, or an overlapping partnership if he is in a deeper playing position), he can act as an attacking partner in a low risk partnership (a direct partnership if the ancillary partner is in a level or deeper playing position, or an overlapping partnership if he is in a more advanced playing position) or he can act as an interchanging partner (if he has a Support duty) in a balanced interchanging partnership.

If you have no Defend or Support duties on a particular flank (or if your only such player is a ML/MR or AML/AMR instructed to Get Further Forward) then you may have problems retaining solidity effectively on that flank. You may therefore want to consider one of the following possible solutions:

  • Combine a Support duty and the Get Further Forward instruction for your deepest wide player, as is the case with the Wing Back and Complete Wing Back roles – this enables you to make an attacking or overloading partner more defensive-minded without changing the type of partnership.
  • Use a DC, DMC or MC with a Defend or Support duty as an ancillary partner (he should not be instructed to Get Further Forward), as detailed above under How to Form Partnerships on the Flanks Using Central Players – this enables you to keep your attack duties on the flank as they are.

Assigning Responsibilities

Try to assign positional responsibilities on each flank individually by choosing roles and duties such that for:

  • Providing defensive cover – at least one player performs.
    • This is typically performed in the deeper half of the flank by your DL/DR or WBL/WBR.
  • Applying defensive pressure – at least one player performs.
    • This is typically performed in the more advanced half of the flank.
  • Stretching play – at least one player performs.
  • Creating chances – at least one player performs.

However, if you are using a more fluid playing system (or possibly a mixture of a more fluid and more structured playing system) then you may want to use two Support duty players who contribute to a responsibility as an alternative to one player who performs it.

To find appropriate roles/duties for each of these positional responsibilities look for the responsibility under “positional responsibilities … on the flank” in the analysis of each role/duty.

Some roles/duties in other positional areas can be used to carry out flank positional responsibilities if desired. Details are included in the analysis of the relevant roles/duties. For example, creating chances on a flank may be performed by a Mezzala (MC Support/Attack). This can be particularly useful if you use a lone wide player on a particular flank.

Most notably, the use of a lone wide player at DL/DR or WBL/WBR, or a Trequartista or similar player at ML/MR or AML/AMR, may mean that you do not have a flank player who performs applying defensive pressure on that flank. This can instead be performed by …

  • … Your closest MC to the flank, if you are using three MCs …
  • … Your closest AMC to the flank, if you are using three AMCs …
  • … An off-centre MC, AMC or STC instructed to increase pressing directness, for example a Ball Winning Midfielder (MC Defend/Support) …

… As long as he also performs applying defensive pressure in central midfield or central attack.

Central Attack

Central attack roles and duties are analysed below. This includes all of the roles/duties that are available in the AMC and STC playing positions.

Forward Movement Partnerships

When choosing roles and duties in central attack it is advisable that you consider forward movement partnerships.

  • It can be useful to form one or more direct partnerships (in particular, high risk direct partnerships) …
    • … If you are using defensive football – to help to penetrate space quickly from deeper areas.
    • … If you are using direct plays – to help to penetrate space directly.

However, if you are using a more fluid playing system (or possibly a mixture of a more fluid and more structured playing system) then you may, alternatively, want to form a balanced interchanging partnership so that players can alternate their forward movement as appropriate.

To find appropriate roles/duties for each type of forward movement partnership look for the type of partnership under “forward movement partnerships … in central attack” in the analysis of each role/duty.

Some roles/duties in other positional areas can be used to form forward movement partnerships in central attack if desired. Details are included in the analysis of the relevant roles/duties.

Assigning Responsibilities

Try to assign positional responsibilities in central attack by choosing roles and duties such that for:

  • Applying defensive pressure – at least one player performs.
  • Stretching play – at least one player performs and at least one additional player contributes or performs.
  • Creating chances – at least one player performs.
  • Taking chances – at least one player performs.

However, if you are using a more fluid playing system (or possibly a mixture of a more fluid and more structured playing system) then you may want to use two Support duty players who contribute to a responsibility as an alternative to one player who performs it.

To find appropriate roles/duties for each of these positional responsibilities look for the responsibility under “positional responsibilities … in central attack” in the analysis of each role/duty.

Some roles/duties in other positional areas can be used to carry out central attack positional responsibilities if desired. Details are included in the analysis of the relevant roles/duties. For example, creating chances in central attack may be performed by an Inside Forward (AML/AMR Support).

There are two types of player who may perform creating chances in central attack. These are:

  • A technical number-ten – a player instructed to Take More Risks but not to Get Further Forward (although he may be instructed to Get Further Forward if he is a DMC/WBL/WBR or MC/ML/MR), subject to other instructions being appropriate for creating chances.
    • Most useful if you are using attacking football or short plays.
  • A target-man – a STC instructed to Hold Up Ball, subject to other instructions being appropriate for creating chances.
    • Most useful if you are using defensive football or direct plays.

Where a role/duty instructs a player to be a technical number-ten or a target-man this is included in the specific analysis section for the role/duty.

In some cases a player may be both a technical number-ten and a target-man, which can be particularly useful if you are combining attacking football or short plays with defensive football or direct plays. Alternatively for such playing styles, you may want to use either type of player or both types.
