Flank Roles

Aim: to choose player roles and duties on the flanks that enable you to balance your playing system and implement your tactical style.

Flank roles and duties are analysed below. This includes all of the roles/duties that are available in the DL/DR, WBL/WBR, ML/MR and AML/AMR playing positions.

If you use a lone flank player on either flank (only one player on the flank) then it is advisable to give him a DL/DR or WBL/WBR playing position to make it easier to balance your tactic.

Forward Movement Partnerships

When choosing roles and duties on the flanks it is advisable that you consider forward movement partnerships. In particular:

  • It can be useful to form one or more overlapping partnerships (in particular, high risk overlapping partnerships or possibly medium risk overlapping partnerships) …
    • … If you are using attacking football – to help to create space in congested advanced areas.
    • … If you are using short plays – to help to create space when cycling possession.
  • It can be useful to form one or more direct partnerships (in particular, high risk direct partnerships or overloading direct partnerships) …
    • … If you are using defensive football – to help to penetrate space quickly from deeper areas.
    • … If you are using direct plays – to help to penetrate space directly.

Alternatively, you may want to form one or more interchanging partnerships (balanced interchanging partnerships or overloading interchanging partnerships) so that players can alternate their forward movement as appropriate. This implements a more fluid aspect to your playing system, with the partnership being more fluid, even if your system fluidity elsewhere is more structured.

You can find appropriate roles/duties for each type of forward movement partnership by looking for the type of partnership under “forward movement partnerships … on the flank” in the “Individual Analysis of Roles & Duties” below.

Some roles/duties in other positional areas can also be used to form forward movement partnerships on the flanks if desired, either as an alternative or additional option. Details are included under How to Form Partnerships on the Flanks Using Central Players below. This can be particularly useful if you use a lone flank player on a particular flank, as an appropriate partner from a central positional area can provide him with attacking support or attacking cover that he may otherwise lack.

How to Form Partnerships on the Flanks Using Central Players

Central roles/duties that can be used to form forward movement partnerships on a flank include:

  • Your closest DC to the flank, if you are using three DCs or a Half Back.
  • Your closest DMC to the flank, if you are using three DMCs.
  • Your closest MC to the flank, if you are using three MCs.
  • Your closest AMC to the flank, if you are using three AMCs.
  • An off-centre DMC, MC or AMC on the same side instructed to Stay Wider (although any player who is being used to provide attacking cover in central midfield should not be instructed to Stay Wider) or move towards the flank; for example, a Carrilero (MC Support) or Mezzala (MC Support/Attack).

The types of forward movement partnership that such roles/duties can form on a flank can be worked out from their tactical instructions, as follows:

  • If instructed to Hold Position – the player can act as an ancillary partner in a low or medium risk partnership (a direct partnership if the attacking partner is in a level or more advanced playing position, or an overlapping partnership if he is in a deeper playing position).
  • If instructed to Get Further Forward – the player can act as an attacking partner in a high or medium risk partnership (a direct partnership if the ancillary partner is in a level or deeper playing position, or an overlapping partnership if he is in a more advanced playing position) or he can act as an overloading partner in an overloading direct partnership.
  • Otherwise – the player can act as an ancillary partner in a high risk partnership (a direct partnership if the attacking partner is in a level or more advanced playing position, or an overlapping partnership if he is in a deeper playing position), he can act as an attacking partner in a low risk partnership (a direct partnership if the ancillary partner is in a level or deeper playing position, or an overlapping partnership if he is in a more advanced playing position) or he can act as an interchanging partner (if he has a Support duty) in a balanced interchanging partnership.

If you have no Defend or Support duties on a particular flank (or if your only Defend or Support duty player is an ML/MR or AML/AMR instructed to Get Further Forward) then you may have problems retaining solidity effectively on that flank. You may therefore want to consider one of the following possible solutions:

  • Combine a Support duty and the Get Further Forward instruction for a D(R/L) or WB(R/L) acting as an overloading partner, as is the case with the Wing Back and Complete Wing Back roles – this enables you to make an overloading partner more defensive-minded without changing the type of partnership.
  • Give a Support duty to an M(R/L) or AM(R/L) acting as the ancillary partner in an overlapping partnership – this enables you to make the ancillary partner more defensive-minded and more effectively overlapped by the attacking partner.
  • Use a DC, DMC or MC with a Defend or Support duty as an ancillary partner (he should not be instructed to Get Further Forward), as detailed above under How to Form Partnerships on the Flanks Using Central Players – this enables you to keep your attack duties on the flank as they are.

Analysis of Forward Movement Partners

Roles/duties that can be used for the partners in your main overlapping partnerships, direct partnerships or interchanging partnerships on the flanks are analysed in the table below, including roles/duties from other positional areas.

For an overlapping partnership (high risk or medium risk) choose an ancillary partner and an attacking partner from the overlapping column.

For a high risk direct partnership choose an ancillary partner and an attacking partner from the direct column. For an overloading direct partnership choose an overloading partner and an attacking partner from the direct column.

For a balanced interchanging partnership choose two balanced partners from the interchanging column. For an overloading interchanging partnership choose two overloading partners from the interchanging column. However, due to the lack of options for such overloading partners you will probably need to create your own, which you can do by instructing balanced partners to Get Further Forward.

Each role/duty’s possible partner types can be worked out based on its position, duty and tactical instructions related to forward movement (mainly Get Further Forward and Hold Position). It is advisable to learn how to work out each role/duty’s possible partner types yourself by studying the table below as this will enable you to easily form partnerships without needing to refer to the table.

1 - will not overlap as effectively due to Support duty.
2 - could cause problems with balancing flank responsibilities (will not perform stretching play on the flank).
3 - forms a medium risk overlapping partnership due to Hold Position instruction.
4 - will not be overlapped as effectively due to Attack duty.
5 - will not overload as effectively due to Support duty but still very useful in a direct partnership.
6 - will not perform stretching play on the flank but can be paired with an overloading partner who does.
7 - will not get forward as effectively due to Support duty.

Positional Responsibilities

Try to assign positional responsibilities on the flanks by choosing roles and duties such that for:

  • Providing defensive cover – at least one player performs on each flank.
    • This is typically performed in the deeper half of the flank by your DL/DR or WBL/WBR.
  • Applying defensive pressure – at least one player performs on each flank.
    • This is typically performed in the more advanced half of the flank.
  • Stretching play – at least one player performs on each flank.
  • Creating chances – at least one player performs on each flank.

You can also use two Support duty players who contribute to a responsibility as an alternative to one player who performs it. This implements a more fluid aspect to your playing system, with the responsibility concerned being carried out more fluidly, even if your system fluidity elsewhere is more structured.

You can find appropriate roles/duties for each of these positional responsibilities by looking for the responsibility under “positional responsibilities … on the flank” in the “Individual Analysis of Roles & Duties” below.

Some roles/duties in other positional areas can also be used to carry out flank positional responsibilities if desired, either as an alternative or additional option. Details are included in the analysis of the relevant roles/duties in the separate guides for each positional area. For example, creating chances on a flank may be performed by a Mezzala (MC Support/Attack). This can be particularly useful if you use a lone flank player on a particular flank.

Most notably, the use of a lone flank player at DL/DR or WBL/WBR, or a Trequartista or similar player at ML/MR or AML/AMR, may mean that you do not have a flank player who performs applying defensive pressure on that flank. This can instead be performed by …

  • … Your closest MC to the flank, if you are using three MCs …
  • … Your closest AMC to the flank, if you are using three AMCs …
  • … An off-centre MC, AMC or STC instructed to increase pressing directness (although any player who is being used to provide attacking cover in central midfield should not be instructed to increase pressing directness); for example, a Ball Winning Midfielder (MC Defend/Support) …

… As long as he also performs applying defensive pressure in central midfield or central attack.

Analysis of Performers & Contributors

Roles/duties that can carry out flank responsibilities are analysed in the tables below, including roles/duties from other positional areas that can be used as an alternative or additional option.

Explanation of analysis:

  • Natural playing styles – the main playing styles that the role/duty is most suitable for based on the number of tactical instructions given by the role/duty that are suitable for each playing style (but not taking into account forward movement partnerships).
    • Attacking – attacking football.
    • Defensive – defensive football.
    • Direct – direct plays.
    • Short – short plays.
    • Aggressive – aggressive pressing.
    • Cautious – containment.
    • Fairly – most suitable for the stated playing style but only to a small extent so also reasonably suitable for a contrasting playing style.
    • Very – most suitable for the stated playing style to a large extent so not very suitable for a contrasting playing style.
    • Extremely – as for “very” but to an even larger extent.
  • Forward movement partnerships – suggested forward movement partnerships for the role/duty to be used in, as explained above.
    • Overlapping – useful for attacking football and short plays.
    • Direct – useful for defensive football and direct plays.
    • Interchanging – useful for adding fluidity.

Individual Analysis of Roles & Duties

Each flank role/duty is analysed individually below.

Explanation of analysis:

  • Instructions – the tactical instructions given by the role/duty. Most of these instructions are the player instructions that are shown in the game (select the relevant playing position icon and click the Edit/Add button at the top-right of the screen) but for some roles/duties hidden instructions are given (these are written in terms of their related playing methods).
  • Natural playing styles – the main playing styles that the role/duty is most suitable for based on the number of instructions given by the role/duty that are suitable for each playing style (but not taking into account forward movement partnerships, which are detailed separately below).
    • For the purposes of determining appropriate natural playing styles for flank roles/duties the following instructions may be ignored:
      • Shoot Less Often – may be ignored for D(R/L)s instructed to Hold Position (because their deep positioning makes this instruction essentially irrelevant).
    • Ignored instructions are shown in brackets so that you can work out the natural playing styles if they are included.
  • Specific analysis – any more specific advice related to the player movement instructed by the role/duty and any additional tactical theory analysis specific to the role/duty.
  • Forward movement scores – the role/duty’s contribution scores for the team’s penetration score, solidity score and support score.
  • Forward movement partnerships – useful forward movement partnerships that the role/duty can instruct a player to be a partner in and the type of partner that the player would be. This includes advice on which playing styles (or system fluidity level in some cases) each partnership is most useful for and what type of partner the role/duty should be paired with to create each partnership.
  • Positional responsibilities – the positional responsibilities that the role/duty instructs a player to perform or contribute to, along with the relevant instructions given to the role/duty.
    • Responsibility specialism level – the extent to which the player carries out the responsibility. This is based on his instructions. For higher specialism levels, in some cases, advice is given on how to counterbalance the player with one or two other players who carry out an opposing responsibility.
    • Responsibility focus level – the extent to which the player’s duty corresponds with the responsibility. Defend and Attack duties give a player a mixture of higher and lower focus levels. Support duties give a player versatile focus levels (in most cases). A higher focus level means that the player carries out the responsibility in a more direct way. A lower focus level means that the player carries out the responsibility in a less direct way (and is therefore not necessarily a bad thing). A versatile focus level is a balance between the two and means that the player can carry out responsibilities in a more balanced way and can essentially alternate between a higher focus level and a lower focus level when required.
    • Direct instructions – the instructions given by the role/duty that are directly related to carrying out the responsibility.
    • Indirect instructions – other instructions given by the role/duty that may help with carrying out the responsibility.
    • Atypical instructions – instructions given by the role/duty that may hinder the carrying out of the responsibility.
    • System-specific instructions – instructions given by the role/duty that can help with carrying out the responsibility if the role/duty is used in a particular way but could otherwise hinder. Advice on how to use the role/duty to carry out the responsibility is also provided.
